Helping people with the pictures and snap shots they take:
Selecting, organinzing, and printing photos is half of this image category and how to share them with your freinds is the other half. Online photo tools and photo sharing services run the gauntlet between Kodak's hope to remain in buisness,
Ofoto , pioneer
Shutterfly , to sites more focused on quickly and cheaply sharing photo's like
Flickr and
Smugbug.
The lines between helping you keep track of your pictures and online shareing services are blurred, thats why I group them here. And I should mention that there are other very good services sponsored by large and small, media and software companies that have great reputations in the processing and enahanments to photos.
For review of the more photo printing and home album replacements services you might see this review of online photo services at
Consumersearch.com
Look carefully at the different services to see what fits you best (our minds function differently, use the tool YOU are comfortable with).
If ease of sharing photos online and forming new social ties is most import to you, join the service that your friends or coworkers are mostly using. While lots of people love the services like Flikr and Smugbug, and I do think they make the world smaller, I dislike the way they try to "box in" areas of the web rather than allowing interconnection between various sites.
You're in their turf, and while their basic services are free they control the links you have associated with your albums, are sort of building a commercial enterprise on top of your efforts, and the fenced garden generally discourages the quick rise of upstart new web sites by not allowing the easy word of mouth linking that lets individuals collectively do an end-run on media companies. (ok, that's opinion, but see, I still mentioned and pointed those site you !)
Sites on sharing artistic images, and sites that are aimed at supporting the craft of photography.
I group artistic and some commercial photography websites despite an apparanent conflict.
I have found that the overlap is pretty high in the sites aspiring to the highest quality of the skill of photography. The commitment to the craft and the ownership of the site by artist and enthusiast owners seems to produce the connection.
A first and important resource if you want to access some really intersting photography on the web:
Photoblogs.org is an incredible directory of sites sharing their photography for the art of it . In general the sites listed are run by truly artistic people. Many many of the bloggers are true professionals.
In the last few years I've picked up the photography hobby. Like many people interested in cameras, and pictures, the artistic pleasure and sharing of beautiful images motivates me. But I don't have any delusions at being a pro-photographer. (See my sites on
Malibu photos and
Marin pictures).
My sharing of photos, in a photoblog format revolves around the content and subject matter of the local areas I want to capture. There are thousands of other photography blogs with similar ideas, and very often, They really know how to take some GREAT artistic images, way better than most of mine. I think photography is a great hobby that allows us to express feelings, but also can help us see beauty in simple things. Check out the photoblogs.org site , and
bookmark it as a doorway to thousands of artistic peoples sites all over the world!
The craft , tools, and laws related to photography
Photoblog.wiki provides an
excellent link jumping place to a short list of other sites that are the authorities in the craft , tools, and laws related to photography.
In each specific subject the blogs photo-wike suggests share links to many others in particular segaments, from what sort of filter to use in particular lighting situations, to very technical product and brand comparison of cameras. Other sites by professors and photography instructors provide a wealth of advice on capturing better images.
So, my advice: Go there, to Photoblog-wiki to begin a deeper exploration of great web resources, that just don't pop up on a first search. Here is a non html list you'll find
there
Sites about photography in general, not photoblogs.
- Coincidences (http://coincidences.typepad.com/), discussions on the art & craft of photography.
- Conscientious (http://jmcolberg.com/weblog/), a wealth of links to photography all over the web.
- PhotoPermit.Org (http://www.photopermit.org/), News and discussion on issues relating to freedom for photographers to make photographs in the face of public anxiety and abusive security personnel
- PhotographyBLOG (http://www.photographyblog.com/) reports on the latest and greatest photography news, both film and digital, both global and UK-based.
- The Luminous Landscape (http://luminous-landscape.com/) has a misleading name, since it's a site with plentiful information about photography in general - tips & tricks, equipment reviews, editorials, etc. - and not just landscapes.
- SilverSilicon.com (http://www.silversilicon.com/) has over 2,000 photography links. Well-organized. Up-to-date.
- DailySnap Interviews (http://www.dailysnap.com/interviews/) - Weekly interviews with photobloggers.
